Since European settlement in 1836, ‘KI’ has held a relatively stable population. This population currently sits at approximately 4,500. Given the island is over 4,400 square kilometres in size, there is plenty of wilderness area for native animals. In fact, more than 40% of KI is still uncleared, native vegetation. Many ‘locals’ believe that one of the things that makes Kangaroo Island special is the peace and serenity that comes with sharing their island home with the animals that reside there.

Thanks to its isolation from mainland Australia, Kangaroo Island provides security for a number of native species. These are able to thrive without threat from introduced species on the mainland, such as foxes. Primary industries on the Island are agriculture, tourism and aquaculture. The Island is becoming increasingly recognised for its quality produce, both nationally and internationally.
